The World Doesn't Change

Our Perception of the World Changes

Mar 3, 2007 Mark Zimmerman

World change won't come through politicians, protests, natural disasters etc. The world is our perception of it, and only there can we make a change.

The world doesn't change. Our perception of the world changes.

Whether we talk about politicians affecting changes, or protests against their changes, or whether we talk about environmental changes and all kinds of things that we think change in the world outside us ... in reality, nothing is happening out there.

The wisdom of Kabbalah explains that outside us there is only Upper Light in complete rest. We perceive all these world events as seemingly taking place. They all exist within our perception and not in the world outside us.

The Upper Light creates our desires and thoughts - our perception of the world and of ourselves. All kinds of images and urges are depicted to us by the Upper Light's appearance in us, according to the form of the desire at that moment.

We, in our current state, contain desires on such low (spiritual) degrees that they make us feel images called "this world." It is as if the world we know and live in is something real and tangible, simply because that's how it appears to us.

In Kabbalah, this world is called "the imaginary world." It is called "imaginary" because the images, the forms that we feel here in our present state, are not real. They stem from an opposition in form to the Upper Light. Correcting our desires so that they are equal in form with the Upper Light is the work in Kabbalah, and attaining complete equivalence of form with the Upper Light is the goal of studying Kabbalah.

We start perceiving ourselves as living in a sea of the Upper Light when the desires in us start becoming corrected with respect to It. The imaginary world, i.e. our current state where we picture politicians, protesters, the six o' clock news, and billions of other details, then decreases in the importance and focus we place on it. In other words, in our more corrected states, the Light doesn't appear in us as all sorts of seemingly physical forms, but we start feeling the Light as Light.

We then feel spiritual forms. Spiritual forms are eternal, like the Upper Light , and in It we experience sensations of completeness, joy and love. This is the result of our desires having equalized in form with the Upper Light. To the extent that we have equivalence of form with the Upper Light, to that same extent we feel love, joy, eternity and completeness.
